The Zoo of Korkeasaari is situated in Helsinki, Finland. It was built on an island near the coast of Helsinki and is the home of almost 150 species from all around the world. From wildcat to birds, you can see all the animals you've been dreaming to see.
To go to Korkeasaari you can take the bus, from the Central Railway Station but the most common way to get there is to take the Ferry from Kauppatori, the market place in Helsinki. The ferry and the entry costs between 10 and 18 euros together and in summer it is probably the best way to get there. The coasts of finland are probably the most beautiful to see. Taking a boat in Finland is the best way to get the greatest view of the country and to catch the feeling of the country.
When you arrive to Korkeasaari you are greated by peacocks, ducks and other birds. They give you compagny as you walk around the zoo, between the wildcats, the bears, the birds, and other crazy animals. It is very easy to see the animals except for the wildcats. If you go early in the morning, you won't have the chance to even see one paw as they are big sleepers. The zoo is very big, so it is not easily crowded which is very nice to enjoy the place.
In summer, if you are too hot, you can stop at one of the numerous booth to buy a delicious ice cream or a cold drink. When you get tired, you can stop at one of the cafeterias and enjoy a simple finish lunch. My other advice is not to go during school holidays, unless the screams of kids don't annoy you.
Once you are done visiting the zoo, you can stop at the shop, which is located just at the entry/exit of the zoo, where you take the ferry. As usual, in those kind of places, the prices are very high, but the zoo sells very cute stuffed animals of the animals you saw in the zoo and it is usually very dificult to resist the urge to buy a cute little tiger for 16euros.
The zoo of Korkeasaari is definitely my favorite place in Finland. Don't hesitate to go spend a day there and greet the animals, you won't regret it !
